Contrary to Semiologic's developers advice (forum.semiologic.com/discussion/5670/whats-this-in-rss-subscription/#Item_0), the RSS Subscription plugin and the Bookmark Me plugin, can have the "what's this" link (which is just a link back to the developer's site), removed. After paying $295 for Semiologic and a $175 a year thereafter, I think having a link back to the developers site is a bit rude and people need to know how to remove it.

Well, after much to do and endless waiting, Semiologic V6.0 – Beta 1 has been released.

I have updated this site, with apprehension, and it took me nearly all day to complete. If you have an established site, then please be careful when upgrading and DO NOT use the installer, just use SFTP, to uploaded the files. Problems I experienced with upgrading were:

Semiologic and Maximum SecurityJoe West released his Maximum Security service not long back, which has been a huge success. But Joe is away sick, at the moment (Joe has Crohn's disease) and won't be back for awhile. We have literally received bags of emails from those Semiologic users who want to know how to implement Joe's techniques for themselves. Well, now you can.

Semiologic recommends filezillaNearly every Semiologic user uses FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to transfer files to their server. DON'T DO IT!

You see, FTP is a security issue, because it sends your data to the server in clear text. This means that your username and password are sent to the server that can be easily read by "sniffers", who strategically places themselves outside your server. Once they have that information, they can easily gain entry to your website, and more times than not, the password is a password that you use on all of your accounts.

Since the long awaited release of WordPress 2.8, it has been discovered that there are two fatal bugs! These bugs are related to the installer and has been erasing files and folders when installing. Patches have been done, but WordPress 2.8.1 won't be released until the end of June. WordPress developers have always released too early and 2.8 is no exception.

Do you get the problem of an image popup or a menu dropdown that goes behind a video or flash component you have on your Semiologic website? Well, you can fix this. Don't comment here about images or dropdown's going behind your Google Adsense ad, because it is a breach of their TOS agreement for an image to go over or behind the ad. To fix it with an Adsense ad, is to simply move the ad.

WordPress/Semiologic are really great programs, but because they are open source, they have security vulnerabilities. Hackers will take advantage of these vulnerabilities to exploit your site and destroy everything!

The question is not, will you be hacked, but, when will I be hacked! If you haven't secured your site, then you will be hacked, it is just a matter of time. Hackers use many methods to break into your site and these areas need to be secured. Having security on your site is imperative. Secure it or lose it!

I am constantly being asked by Semiologic customers, about which membership software I would recommend.

To recommend a membership program is not an easy task, as each one does something more or less than the others. Plus, finding one that plays well with WordPress and Semiologic is another consideration. There are really only two that are any good, in my opinion, anyway.

I am constantly amazed at how many WordPress and Semiologic users fail to protect their directories, in particular, their plugins directory. These directories are vulnerable to hackers doing some serious damage to your site. If you look at a site's wp-content/plugins directory through your browser, more times than not, you will see their complete list of plugins! This is a security issue and needs to be quickly fixed.

I am constantly asked "how to get a good Page Rank from Google and how to get visitors to my site".

I always tell people to forget about Google's Page Rank – it is a complete waste of time and a joke.

Google

You see, Google is always changing the requirements to get a good page rank and nigh impossible to keep up with. Plus Google's Page Rank system is really just a popularity contest. If site A is high ranked and link to site B, Google equates that to; if site A is important and is linking to site B, then Site A considers site B to be important and Google also believes site B is important, and ranks it accordingly. There is nothing about original content, which Google denies, but let me give you an example.

I came across a site that had a PR of 6. It had no content, except for links. Actually, now get this, ALL of the link content sat outside of the (<body>) tags!! The reason it got a PR of 6, was because of a site (that had a PR of 6) that linked to it, nothing more. Google's Page Rank is a joke and you need to stop worrying about how good or bad of a rank they assign you.

UPDATE: Google done its rounds today and handed out page ranks. Our Home page received a 2! But here is the crazy part, doing some work on the site, in the Admin in the Script Manager page, when I noticed something very odd. Google had given the Script Manager admin page a page rank of 4!! I kid you not. Checkout the screenshot.

Proof that Google is a joke!
